from punta de ses portes, the southern tip of ibiza, a chain of islets and rocks points the way to trucadors, the northernmost tip of formentera. only one of these islets is big enough to be habitable, or even worth visiting s'espalmador, the islet closest to formentera....
es pujols and cala saona are the major tourist developments on formentera. within easy reach of the village are fine beaches: platja des pujols close to the village, where fishing boats are still pulled on to the sand, and those on the low headland of trucadors. the latter include ses illetes, formentera's only official nude beach, though there are as many unofficial nude beaches as there are nudists in search of a quiet stretch of sand. the facilities on es pujols' beaches are simpler than on ibiza, but that is in keeping with the slower pace of life on the smaller island....
the lighthouse at the headland is la mola's most prominent feature, but many visitors will be surprised to learn that it has another claim to fame: there is also a memorial to jules verne here. the great science-fiction writer had a habit of setting his stories against a background of actual geographical features, and la mola features in hector servadac or the journey around the solar system....

formentera's saltwater lagoons are one of the most important wildlife habitats in the balearics. currently they are the centre of a controversy as to whether they should be developed to enhance the island's tourist industry, or whether a national park should be set up to preserve their unique environment for the future....

the ferry boats from ibiza to formentera have their terminus at la savina - la sabinal, formentera's only harbor. it takes its name from the phoenician word for the juniper which still grows throughout the island. formentera has no airport, so most visitors' first view of the island is of la savina, its architecture making it seem more of a north african port than a european one....

sant francesc de formentera (san francisco javier) is a complete contrast to ibiza's capital of eivissa. it is smaller, with only around 1,000 inhabitants, quieter and seems almost to be blinking at the strange sights tourism has brought it. little seems to have changed here for centuries and it is to be hoped that the inevitable future tourist development will not change the town's lovely character....
