sant adeodato

the western end of sant tomas beach is totally undeveloped and known as sant adeodato the sand is fine, the swimming is safe but there are few beach facilities. a short walk on a sandy path behind the beach, passing the islet of binicodrell offshore, brings you to the larger beach at binigaus, popular with nudists but with dangerous currents that make it unsafe for swimming. from binigaus you can walk inland along the barranc de binigaus, a limestone gorge riddled with caves, including the cathedral like cova des coloms though the easier approach to this particular cave is nearby....

sant lluis

even by menorcan standards, sant lluis is white when the sun is shining, it fairly sparkles. founded by the french in 1761 during their brief occupation of menorca to provide housing for their troops, it is laid out in a grid style around a series of attractive squares. the town was named after louis ix, to whom the huge, whitewashed, buttressed church is dedicated; the west front contains the coats of arms of the french royal family as well as the comte de lannion,...

sant tomas

this long beach of pale golden sand is virtually a continuation of the beach at son bou. separated from it by a pair of low headlands once a quiet spot, it has grown into a major resort with four large hotels and an urbanizacion creeping up the hills behind the beach. in 1989 a freak storm blew away all the sand from the beach and what you see now has been imported in its place. a path at the western end of the beach leads to the quieter beaches of sant adeodato and binigaus . take note of the flag system for safe bathing as the beach has dangerous currents....

climbing menorca's third highest hill today, there is little to suggest that it once supported the island's most significant fortress built by the romans and strengthened by the moors, the castle on santa agueda's summit was the last muslim stronghold to resist the catalan conquest in 1287....

shangrila albufera

the name means 'an imaginary paradise', and imaginary it has turned out to be. conceived in the tourist boom of the 1970s as an up market golf resort on the shores of the s'albufera lake shangrila was the subject of years of legal and political argument before being finally halted on the grounds that it represented illegal development in a conservation area. by this time many of the houses had been built; some were already lived in....

torralba d en salord

this extensive site, 3km south of alaior, is the closest menorca has come to turning its prehistoric ruins into a tourist attraction. the road that used to bisect the site has been diverted, a car and coach park created, and arrows have been put up to guide visitors around menorca's first archaeological park the only ancient site in menorca to levy an admission charge. there are the remains of a complete village here, including a taula, two talaiots and a cyclopean wall, along with artificial burial caves. from the village there are good views of the white town of alaior with monte toro towering over it in the distance....

arenal de son saura beach

one of menorca's prettiest beaches is also one of the hardest to reach. to get there by car you have to cross farmland and in summer the farmer levies a toll; this is one of the last remaining beaches where the island government has not yet managed to buy up the land in order to create free access....

arenal d en castell beach

this popular holiday centre is the most westerly of the trio of resorts reached by heading north from alaior. each of the three has its own distinct character and arenal (the name means 'sandy place') is the brash one. the setting is superb a near circular bay with a long arc of fine sand backing on to dunes and pine fringed cliffs but it is rather spoilt by the presence of two enormous modern hotels towering over the beach. there is windsurfing and waterskiing; you can hire pedal boats, motorboats, parasols and sun beds. the shallow water and the presence of a first aid post make this a safe beach for children....
