the name of this quiet village means 'the large town in the south, es migjorn being the local term for the low limestone plateau, broken by gorges, which dominates the landscape of southern menorca. for 200 years the village was known as san cristobal, after a blacksmith who founded a township here in 1769 but before that it was known locally as es migjorn gran and it has recently reverted to its old name....
