usually known simply as guia, this town is situated 3km east of its neighbor and friendly rival, galdar. as in galdar, it pays to leave the main road and enter the old quarter, climbing briefly if steeply up narrow but stately streets (start where the road makes an awkward bend). the las palmas to gaida highway bypasses guia and has restored the town to its early serenity....

tafira alta y baja

like their neighbour, santa brigida, the towns of tafira alta and baja are now no more than comfortable residential suburbs of las palmas. they have large houses, ample gardens, and enjoy the proximity of the jardin canario and the university campus. all is gracious suburban semi-rurality, spoiled only by the proximity of the busy 811 which runs through here from las palmas to vega de san mateo, passing through a narrow canyon of main street....

telde gran canaria

telde, in the east of the island and south of las palmas, is gran canaria's second largest town. historically, it was the seat of the aboriginal king, or guanarteme, who controlled the eastern part of the island. its environs are not inviting - warehouses, factories and packing plants stretch down a dry and scrubby plain to the coastal motorway. the modern town centre is busy and thrumming with traffic the old town centre, as anywhere on the island, is the best bit. the most picturesque part is the barrio of san francisco a place of stone coigned white houses, wooden balconies and pitched roofs around the 18th century church of san francisco, home to rich merchants in earlier days....
