granada cathedral is otherwise known as the catedral de santa marÃa de la encarnación. construction of this magnificent building began in 1523 - on the site of the original mosque - on the orders of queen isabella as a symbol to spain and the world that the victory against the moors was complete.the gothic design changed within a few years to a more renaissance-style and building work continued for many years until 1561, when the still-unfinished cathedral was first consecrated. the massive west front was added in 1667 and the wonderful relief over the main door (puerta principal) was completed in 1717 after the main works had been completed in 1704. the interior is amazingly light and richly decorated....

the albaicin - set between the alhambra and sacromonte hills and bordered by the river darro - is a step back in time. originally a walled city, the narrow winding streets are redolent with moorish influences. the puerta de elvira, the last remaining city gate, is well over 1,000 years old.at the conquest of granada in 1492 there were half a million moors in the city. many died in the battles, other left, but some 200,000 stayed, mainly in the albaicin area. here, despite the destruction of mosques, they continued to live according to the muslim faith....

based in the lower floors of the palace of carlos v, this wonderful collection of exhibits is often missed by visitors still reeling from the splendours of the alhambra. there are displays of plaster arabesques saved from the early alhambra and an impressive collection of ceramics. from the nasrid era of the 14th and 15th centuries the museum houses a fine gathering of paintings and stunning wooden panels and screens with elaborate carvings....

bordering the alhambra, these moorish gardens were designed to recreate the paradise depicted in the koran; lush, tranquil gardens with abundant running waters, linked by walkways and open terraces, where the moorish royals and courtiers could rest in peaceful seclusion.the main walk leads to the patio de la acequia at the heart the palace grounds. it is bordered by a gallery of 18 arches on the western side. the northern entrance the mirador has five marble arches in front and three behind, and leads to the patio de los cipresos....

on the 13 september 1504, having decided that granada would be their final resting place, queen isabella and king ferdinand signed a royal warrant that set in place the building of the royal chapel. sadly, isabella died before the work could start in 1505 and king died one year before the work was completed in 1517....
a grand and glorious extravaganza, this is by far the most lavish of spain's carthusian monasteries. founded in 1516, the land was donated by ‘el gran capitán' gonzalo de córdoba and built, some say, to rival the alhambra. certainly, nothing was spared in creating the overwhelming baroque building and its staggering interior. the church altar of twisted, coloured marble columns was once described as a "motionless architectural earthquake"....
if you love art in beautiful surroundings, this museum is a must. situated in the palace of carlos v at the alhambra, the museum was started in 1836, moving to the current site in 1958. the museum is home to some of the finest examples of art and sculpture from the 16th century onwards.the painting school of granada - started by pedro machuca and developed by alonso cano and pedro de moya - is particularly well represented. the florentino sculpture of the burial of christ (el entierro de christo) is exhibited alongside art collected from the convents and churches of granada....
sacromonte, the soul of granada: the ancestral home of granada's gypsy population, the flamenco and cave dwellings. the gypsy clans of sacromonte have produced many of spain's finest flamenco artists and today some of the best flamenco performances are to be found in the area. sadly, many are blatantly designed for the tourist market and you can find yourself pressurised to buy souvenirs and drinks....

malaga cathedral was built between 1528 and 1782 and is sometimes referred to as 'la manquita' (one armed woman) due to the fact it only has one tower when it was originally planned to have two.the interior of the cathedral here in malaga, is influenced by the styles of renaissance and baroque. the iglesia del sagrano adjoins the cathedral, and was founded during the 15th century on the site of a mosque....
