fifty years ago lloret de mar was still a fishing village; now it has been transformed into a pulsating resort whose population rises to 200,000 in summer and where it is easier to get a hamburger than a spanish meal. the main thoroughfare, carrer la riera, is a non-stop strip of discos, bars and amusement arcades, busy day and night. during the 1990s there have been attempts to change lloret's image, but that seems to be missing the point. if you want fun in the sun, there's no better place....
this fishing port at the eastern end of palamas bay was founded in 1277 and soon became an important naval base: when the aragonese fleet conquered sicily in 1299, it sailed from palamas. in the 19th century palamas was the chief export harbor for catalonia's cork industry, and despite the growth of tourism the town retains a significant commercial base today. the fishing fleet still sails each day from palamas and its arrival each afternoon is followed by a lively fish auction by the harbour....

the small fishing harbor of the village of castell d'aro has grown over the last 50 years into the costa brava's second largest resort, with a population that rises from 3,000 in winter to more than 100,000 in summer. the beach is 3km of golden sand; the night life is legendary and there are numerous activities for children. from discos to water sports, whatever you want in platja d'aro is probably there except peace and quiet....

this used to be the costa brava's busiest resort. it's an unexpectedly handsome and dignified town, where most of the building took place before the 1960s high-rise boom. fishing and boat-building are important industries, and during the 19th century the town grew rich on the export trade in cork....
the montseny mountain range is an attractive region of cork, pine and beech forests, villages and mountain streams, straddling the border between girona and barcelona provinces, just inland from the southern costa brava. it's known throughout spain for its springs: much of the country's mineral water is bottled here, especially in the spa town of sant hilari sacalm....
