PLAZA D'ESPANYA IBIZA

At the extreme eastern edge of the Dalt Vila lies Plaza d'Espanya, another of the famous landmarks of the old town. Within there is a reclining statue of Guillem de Montgri, who captured the island in 1235.

The Ajuntament (Town Hall), which opens on to the square, occupies part of a large white building erected in the 17th century as a monastery for Dominican priests. Of the monastery, only the church  remains.

From Plaza d' Espanya two excellent old streets head off westwards. Calle de Pere Tur has several fine mansions, one of which, Casa Riquer, was built by Antonio Riquer, among Ibiza's most famous and, from the fine style of the house, most successful pirates. Calle Major has an array of equally fine houses.
