LA MOLA IBIZA

The lighthouse at the headland is La Mola's most prominent feature, but many visitors will be surprised to learn that it has another claim to fame: there is also a memorial to Jules Verne here. The great science-fiction writer had a habit of setting his stories against a background of actual geographical features, and La Mola features in Hector Servadac or the Journey around the Solar System. The road to the headland passes through the scattered village of EI Pilar, from where a short rough track heads south to La Moli Veil de la Molathe, the Mola windmill. This fine old corn mill was built in 1778 and is still in regular use, making it the oldest functioning windmill on the Pine Islands. Close to the windmill is the church of EI Pilar, a fine late 18th century building. Finally, at the bottom of the steep hill that rises to the La Mola plateau, Es Cala, on the northern shore, is worth visiting. This tiny fishing village shelters beneath a huge, Imposing crag and from it an old Roman road the Camino Romano, which is signposted and can be followed runs parallel to the shore.
