ES PUJOLS AND CALA SAONA FORMENTERA

Es Pujols and Cala Saona are the major tourist developments on Formentera. Within easy reach of the village are fine beaches: Platja des Pujols close to the village, where fishing boats are still pulled on to the sand, and those on the low headland of Trucadors. The latter include Ses Illetes, Formentera's only official nude beach, though there are as many unofficial nude beaches as there are nudists in search of a quiet stretch of sand. The facilities on Es Pujols' beaches are simpler than on Ibiza, but that is in keeping with the slower pace of life on the smaller island.

To the east of the village is the promontory of Punta Prima. Here, as on many of Formentera's headlands, there is an 18th century watchtower, though this one is being gradually overshadowed by tourist hotels. This is sad, as it is arguably the only place on the island where the modern development has been less than sympathetic but that is a minor criticism: with its old fishermen's huts and a view across Estany Pudent to Ibiza's southern coast, with Es Vedra prominent, Es Pujols is still an excellent place.
