CASTLE AND EPISCOPAL PALACE
The Castle (Castelli and Episcopal Palace (Palacio Episcopall stand across from the cathedral and Archaeological Museum, though they are at present inaccessible due to their ruinous state. The castle dates from at least the time of the Moors and is almost certainly older. Sadly, the numerous re-building, necessary both to modify the defenses in line with changes in weaponry and to satisfy the desires of the latest island ruler, created an odd assortment of bits and pieces which required continuous upkeep When the need for a fortress declined in the 19th century, maintenance stopped and the castle fell into disrepair.
Opposite the castle stands the equally ruinous bishop's palace. In the late 18th-century Eivissa was given city status and became the seat of a bishop, though the palace predates that event by several centuries, having been built in the fine Gothic style of the first cathedral.
