CALA LLONGA IBIZA

Before the advent of mass tourism, Cala LLonga was one of the scenic highlights of the island. The bay is long and narrow (by Ibizan standards), more like a Norwegian fjord in miniature than the characteristic half-moon shape of Ibiza. At one time, rocks topped with typical coastal scrub blazed white in the sun on either side of the fjord which ended with a 200m beach of white sand.

Then the developers came, building hotels and apartments. How visitors react to such development depends upon their standpoint. The hotels and apartments have brought wealth and prosperity to the island and the local economy, and pleasure into the lives of countless holidaymakers but at the same time they have not added to the scenic delights of this most delightful of bays.

On the positive side, Cala Llonga's sheltered beach is one of the best on the island for children and it is possible to enjoy the scenery take the coastal path from the centre of the 'village' of Cala Llonga, going uphill to Puig Marina. The path requires perseverance but soon, beyond the hilltop, a small valley is reached. To the right here a tunnel (it is quite short, so no torch is required) leads to Cala Blanca, a bay without a beach. Swimming is possible from the rocks. To return, stay closer to the cliff edge, rounding Punta Roja for a view of Cala Llonga's fjord
