Aiport Parking

Short stay public parking is available on the first four floors of the main car park, with 3,180 spaces. For stays of less than 30 minutes, parking is free. Parking for longer than 30 minutes is charged at 52 cents for the next 30 minutes and 98 cents per hour after that. The máximum daily rate chargeable up to a four day stay is €10.30 and for five days and more, €8.25.
Long stay public parking is available on floors 5 and six of the main car park, with 1,500 spaces. Prices are €10.30 per day up to four days, and €5.15 per day from the fifth day onwards.

Bus Service

The airport bus to and from Palma city leaves from the airport arrivals floor. It runs from the airport from 6.10am – 1.10am (winter), and from 6.10am – 2.15am (summer). From Palma centre to the airport, it runs from 5.30am – 1am (Winter) and from 5.30am – 2.30am (summer).

Cadiz Carnival

Spain prides itself on being the carnival capital of Europe, and there is no better example of this than the fabulous Cadiz Carnival, which takes to the streets between January 31st and February 10th each year.

As one of Spain´s major ports in the 16th century, Cadiz enjoyed strong trade links with Venice, and copied the city´s carnival theme to recreate in Spain.

This colourful and flamboyant street party winds its way through the centre of the city and has become famous for its entertaining and original figurines, pilgrimages and satirical musicians who take part in the procession. Many revellers wear costumes and masks or paint their faces with lipstick before taking to the streets.

Bullfight Season Madrid

Bullfighting may not be on everyone´s list of favourite things to do in Spain, but it is undoubtedly a large part of the country´s heritage and culture, and particularly in the capital city, Madrid. The first bullfight took place in 711 AD to honour the crowning of King Alfons VIII, and the sport was originally only associated with royalty, when the bulls were fought on horseback.

Held every Sunday between March and October at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, and also on various bank holidays throughout this time, these events attract thousands of spectators every weekend. Many other activities are held to coincide with the bullfighting Sundays, and the streets around the bullring are always crowded.

Top fighters come to Madrid during the season to show off their skills and courage, and aficionados of the corrida flock to the city from all over Spain.

Blood at the Iglesia de la Encarnación Madrid

One of the most traditional and bizarre celebrations takes place annually at the Iglesia de la Encarnación in Madrid. An ancient relic containing the blood of the doctor, San Pantaleón, who was martyred in the 4th century AD is shown to the devout onlookers who watch with awe as the congealed blood liquefies before them.


Originating from Pope Paul V´s time, when the relic was bequeathed to the Viceroy of Naples in the 7th century, it found its way to Madrid through the viceroy´s daughter who served as a nun there.


Although this event may not be to everyone´s taste, it is a fascinating phenomenon, and is definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Once liquefied, the relic containing the blood is paraded through the church to shouts of celebration from the locals.

Autumn Festival Jerez

In a city known for its fine wines and sherries, Jerez´s Autumn Festival is one of the citys most popular events of the year.

Hosted to celebrate the annual grape harvest, the famous Andalucian horses and the tradition of the flamenco dance, this celebration fills the town with music, dancing and street entertainment.
Boasting the best chalky soil for grape growing, Jerez is at the centre of the ´sherry triangle´ and produces some of the worlds best fortified wines. The Royal School of Equestrian Art is also based here, and the city is renowned for the quality and training of its horses.

Street entertainment including puppet shows, singers, dancers, theatre and a grand procession in honour of the Virgin de la Merced and the blessing of the grapes also takes place.

Atlantic Rally for Cruisers Gran Canaria

First held in 1986, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers has become a highlight of the international sailing calendar. Starting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and and finishing in Rodney Bay, on the Caribbean island of St.Lucia, this major event draws crowds of spectators and competitors from around the world.

This is the largest trans-ocean sailing event in the world, and over 170 competitors take part, covering 2,700 nautical miles from start to finish. Angel Sunday Majorca Festival

Known as ´Domingo del Angel´ the Sunday after Easter is celebrated in style through the streets of Palma de Majorca. A colourful procession is followed by a blessing and plenty of traditional food.

Dating back to the 15th century, this procession normally took place in order to feed the poor, and bread was blessed before being handed out.

Now the biggest festival in Majorca, the fun starts in the early hours of the morning when hundreds of people parade through the streets to the Castillo de Bellver where they are met by locals dressed as giants, a host of musicians and dancers and a vast array of local food to sample. Often continuing until late at night, there are also special games for the children.

Alicante Carnival

Alicante Carnival is the highlight of the city´s social calendar, and attracts crowds from all over Europe.

Lasting for three weeks, this spectacular event reaches its climax with amazing processions and parades through the main areas of La Rambla and El Barrio, when the whole city comes alive with colourful costumes, music and dancing.

Beginning on a more serious note with performances of the plays, Don Camal and Doña Cuaresma, this fabulous celebration ends with the bizarre funeral wake and burial of the sardine. Bringing luck and fortune to the city, a replica sardine plus carnival masks and make up are buried on the beach, and accompanied by locals dressed in black and carrying candles as a sign of mourning.

Alcoy Moors and Christians Festival

The Alcoy Moors and Christians Festival is one of the most spectacular events to take place on the Costa Blanca. Part of the celebrations to honour St.George, patron saint of the region, is a re-enactment of the battle between the Moors and Christians, with the sound of swords hitting shields and blood curdling screams reverberating around the streets.

In preparation for the main battle, for two days the armies march around the town, to the sound of pipes and drums. All ranks are represented from the top officers down to the pitch fork carrying peasants.

The major battle takes place the day after St.George´s Day, 24th April, and explosions, fake gun fire, and plenty of smoke can be seen and heard all over Alcoi.

Great emphasis is put on the authenticity of this festival to make it as realistic as possible, and the end product gives a great insight into the proper battle which took place in the 13th Century.

Madrid Festival May

The 2nd May Celebrations, Madrid

Held annually in the Plaza Dos de Mayo, this traditional celebration pays homage to the amazing spirit of the Madrileños who fought courageously against the French army on 2nd May, 1808.
Napolean´s brother, Joseph Bonaparte, enjoyed a brief spell as King of Spain in the early 1800s, the French were finally forced out in 1813, and this historic day is now celebrated in the Masalana district of the city with music and dancing.

Festivities take place in and around Masalana, which was named after the seamstress, Manuela Masalana, who was shot in the struggle.

Dos de Mayo celebrations herald the beginning of Madrid´s summer street fiestas which take place throughout the city.

2..The Barcelona Carnival

Billed as one of Barcelona´s most gluttonous festivals, the city´s annual carnival combines traditional celebrations with a massive feast of all things fatty. The aptly named Fatty Thursday attracts big crowds and even hosts a tortilla competition with prizes awarded for the most original and tasty fillings. Spicy meats and local sausages are also something of a speciality here, and hundreds of dishes are prepared and enjoyed by the partygoers.

Hosted annually just before the fasting period of Lent, the streets are awash with colour and noise as the local carnival associations compete for the Golden Pepper Award. On the final Saturday, the highlight of the carnival takes place with a grand procession through the streets, where ornate carriages, decorated floats and colourful costumes wind their way through the city, to a backdrop of confetti and streamers.

7..Benidorm Fiesta Week.

Held annually, Benidorm Fiesta Week is the highlight of the town´s social calendar, and attracts visitors from all over Europe. This famous resort town explodes in a sea of colour, music and dancing, as the celebrations to honour La Virgen del Sufrage and Jaime Apostol, get under way. Religious processions, including a huge flower filled parade with carriages and traditional costumes, winds its way through the packed streets.

The statue of the virgin is dressed in a gold and blue costume and carried in procession to the plaza in front of the church of San Jaime. A whole range of activities take place over the six days of the festival, including football, fishing competitions, live music and a host of cultural events . Live midnight concerts are held at the Auditorium in Aiguera Park, and this incredible week culminates with a spectacular firework display.

10..Fira de Santa Lucia, Barcelona

Hosting the largest Christmas fair in the city, the Fira de Santa Lucia celebrations attract visitors from far and wide. Originally held in 1786, this yuletide extravaganza outside Barcelona Cathedral plays host to over 300 stalls selling hundreds of seasonal goodies including art and craftwork; traditional sweets and gifts.

Musical parades, a nativity scene and many other fun events take place to keep the children entertained. The caga tió is a mythical character which most Catalan children recognise, and is kept in many homes over the Christmas period. Resembling a smiley log, it is looked after by the children in the days leading up to Christmas, kept warm and fed until Christmas Day when it is put into the fireplace and the children sing traditional songs and share out its contents of sweets, nuts, dried fruit and turrón.

Gran Canaria Airport.Information

The official airport taxis are situated just outside the main arrivals halls at the airport, and drop off passengers just outside the departures hall. The fares are split into two bands depending on the day and time you travel.

Distressed and repossessed properties for sale on the Costa del Sol

Owing to the steep decline of the property market in Southern Spain and the UK, many owners who have bought off plan properties in Andalucia find themselves in an impossible position.
The situation is confusing for buyers and sellers, and particularly for people looking to move to the Costa del Sol. Conflicting points include:

-People are still making lots of money from off-plan investments on the Costa del Sol.
-People buying off-plan properties are making little or no profit on the Costa del Sol.
-The market on the Costa del Sol is strong and is still increasing by over 10% per year.
-The market on the Costa del Sol is saturated with off-plan investors attempting to sell before completion.

The truth is that all of these statements are true – depending on the location and purchase price of the property.

Five or six years ago, many investors made fantastic profits from buying properties off-plan, before they had even started being built, and then flipping them (selling them on)before completion. This is not always the case and owners are increasingly having their properties repossessed by the developers when they cannot complete on the purchase, or selling on at well below their original purchase price to try and claw some money back.

With increased internet and television publicity, off-plan investment was easy to understand and became easily available to the general public who may have previously never considered buying property in this way.

The off-plan concept was to buy property with developers offering a discounted price if the investor exchanged at planning stage (before being built). Many investors bought with the sole intention of selling 2 years later at an increased price of approximately 20-30%. With investors only paying 30% before completion, returns were very profitable. The benefits of the investors selling before completion were that tax and completion costs, could be avoided.

However, with so many investors trying to sell properties in each development, at the same time, the market became saturated on that particular development. This results adversely on their selling price. Therefore, many investors have now decided to keep their properties and let them out, and gain some income to go towards the mortgage costs. The properties can then be put up for sale when the market picks up and the vendor will achieve a better price.
This means there are a wealth of distressed and repossessed properties for sale on the Costa del Sol.

In many cases, investor´s circumstances may have changed drastically and, in most cases if they cannot complete the payment on their properties, the developer will not only repossess the property but also keep the 30% deposit which the purchasers will have paid at the outset.


As always, there are two sides to every coin, and there are now many bargains to be had in and around Marbella and the Costa del Sol, which is quickly becoming a buyers dream. Often properties are selling for up to 30% less than their market value, and with 80-100% finance available, buyers are starting to flock back to the Costa del Sol.

A distressed sale does not mean there is a problem with the property, but simply that the vendors need to sell quickly for financial or personal reasons. It wasn´t until the 18th Century that men began to fight bulls alone and without the horses. The most famous bullfighting family to arrive in Ronda was the Romero family. Pedro Romero fought 5,600 bulls without ever being injured. The bullring at Ronda also houses a museum near the entrance.

The Casa del Rey Moro has a Moorish style, but was actually built in the 18th Century and has become one of Ronda´s most visited sights. The staircase has 300 steps and visitors are intrigued by the ´Room of Secrets´ where they can whisper to each other through the walls.

The Moorish castle, the Alcazaba, is the second largest in Muslim fortress in Andalucia – after the Alhambra at Granada, and it was once one of the most important port cities in Spain. During the Spanish Civil War, Almeria and Malaga were the last cities to surrender to Franco´s forces, and it was only after his death that an autonomous status was granted for the region.
In the later part of the 20th Century, Almeria enjoyed massive economic growth with tourism, and also with the advent of intensive farming and the growing of fruit and vegetables, which are still the biggest money earners for the region. Much of the agriculture is situated in the west of the region, where visitors will see field upon field of plastic greenhouses, which produce tons of fruit and vegetables. Seventy per cent of the food grown is exported to other parts of Europe, and the UK is one of the biggest importers.

Also around this time, several spaghetti westerns were filmed in Almeria. Its dry, dusty landscapes, including the Tabernas Desert, made it the perfect location for films such as, A fistful of dollars, and The good, the bad and the ugly. The region can easily be reached by the A-7 Mediterranean Highway and the A-92 which links it with the rest of Andalucía. By sea, the port of Almeria has lines to Algeria, Morocco and Melilla. There are also moorings for pleasure boats.

One of Almeria’s most beautiful natural parks is the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, which is of volcanic origin, and is the largest and most significant marine-terrestrial space in the Western Mediterranean. Covering an area of 380 square kilometers, this is one of Andalucía’s most visited nature reserves. Covering areas of Nijar, Almeria and Carboneras,
the region´s villages attract lovers of nature and the countryside from all over Europe. The Cabo de Gata Natural Park runs through the municipal areas of Níjar, Almería and Carboneras. This is one of the few parks of its kind which also boasts un spoilt beaches, and the area´s temperate climate is one of its main attractions.

One of the better known towns in the province is Mojacar, which has become popular amongst tourists, especially from the UK, and over the past ten years, thousands of visitors have invested in holiday homes here. And with 17km of beautiful beaches, narrow streets and paved courtyards, who can blame them? The city was to be an important port in the Arab world for more than six centuries, during this time the Christians attempted to capture it on several occasions, and after a brief period under Christian control it was destroyed in 1369 by the King of Granada, Mohamed V, who considered it impossible to maintain its defense. It fell into Christian hands for good in 1344, when it was conquered by Alfonso XI, known as the Righteous.


Tourism in Algeciras relies on beautiful beaches, where wind sailing and scuba diving are practiced. Algeciras is not only a locality in transit. Having rescued donkeys from all over Europe, this fascinating sanctuary at Fuente de la Piedra, has been rescuing and caring for donkeys since 2001, and is situated just 40 minutes north of Malaga. This traditional cortijo, complete with olive groves and traditional Andalucian buildings is close to the famous Flamingo Lake, which is the largest natural lake in the Iberian Peninsula, and home to over 170 bird species.

Visitors to the donkey sanctuary cannot fail to be impressed by the wonderful facilities at the centre, and the obvious care that is given to the animals. Many of them are rescued from terrible conditions in both Spain and the rest of Europe, and cases of neglect and cruelty are also investigated.El Refugio is a registered Spanish Association, primarily concerned with the welfare of donkeys and mules, and is also known to lobby for improved legislation for these animals throughout Europe. It is also a subsidiary of the Donkey Sanctuary in southern England.
We visited the centre with my friends and their two children, and although we were all touched by the plight of the donkeys, it was good to know that they were now being looked after and cared for by such a bunch of dedicated people.

The ever growing family of donkeys are fed, treated and provided with refuge, and the centre depends entirely on donations. Although entrance to the sanctuary is free, the majority of visitors leave donations to support the upkeep and care of the animals.As animal lovers, we found this visit to be particularly humbling and the rescue stories of how the donkeys came to be at El Refugio were touching. The founders and workers at the sanctuary are also committed to stop donkeys and mules being mistreated and sold at market, and also details efforts to help improve the welfare of animals involved in the donkey taxi business.Villanueva de la Vera
Another main campaign is to stop the cruelty and distress to donkeys at the annual Villanueva de la Vera Festival.

The festival of Pero Palo takes place in Villanueva de la Vera (Cáceres- Extremadura-Spain) every Shrove Tuesday. In this popular festival a poor and helpless donkey is taken through the streets of the village to be ridden by the drunkest rider and to be subjected to degrading and cruel treatment for more than an hour. The parliament of Junta de Extremadura passed a law (Ley 5/2002) for the Protection of Animals in the region of Extremadura which forbids the utilisation of animals in festivals and public shows when the animal receives cruel mistreatment. El Refugio del Burrito and The Donkey Sanctuary have witnessed this festival since 1986. We thought that the passing of that law meant the end of the torture the donkey receives, but reality has proved that nothing has changed. Over 3,500 letters have been sent to the sanctuary to outlaw this cruel event.

Visitors to the sanctuary can adopt one of eight donkeys for as little as €10 a year, and will receive a certificate and photo of the animal, plus regular updates on their future progress. This money goes towards the care and upkeep of the donkeys, and helps them recover from their years of negligence they have usually endured. The adoption package is also explained on the website, and can be paid for online. A gift shop is also situated on site, where the kids can take buy some souvenirs to take home.Flamingo Lake

After a fascinating day out, we stopped off at the Flamingo Lake on the way home. After drinks and tapas in Fuente de la Piedra, we stopped off at this beautiful lake, and were amazed at the species of birds we saw. This salt lake is approximately 6.5km long and 2.5km wide, and is the most important breeding ground for flamingos in the Iberian Peninsula. This is unspoilt beauty at its best, and the nearby village has been generally untouched by tourism. Directions:-From Malaga take the road to Antequera. Follow the signs for Seville, taking the A-92 motorway. Take the junction marked 132 to Fuente de Piedra and head into the village, turning left next to the Hotel Fuente de Piedra. Follow the track and take the second turn on the left after passing a large house on your right. The sanctuary is situated at the end of this track.
