MACIZO DE TENO MOUNTAINS TENERIFE
The volcanic basalt mountains in north-western Tenerife are among the most ancient rocks of the island. Their unusual geology and flora, and the steep, buckled terrain make the Teno Massif a splendid place for hiking. Masca, a mountain village perched above a deep gorge, was once remote and virtually inaccessible. Now a daringly engineered road has made it a popular excursion, with roadside restaurants providing dazzling views.
Another improved road leads west from the little regional centre of Buenavista del Norte to Tenerife's most westerly point, the Punta de Teno, a dramatic headland with a lighthouse, where the Atlantic breaks against black rocks. Buenavista del Norte itself has a pretty main square with some 18th century mansions; the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios has fine altarpieces and a notable mudejar (Moslem-style) ceiling.
