LA LAGUNA CATHEDRAL TENERIFE

The town's large cathedral is older than it appears. Founded in 1515, it was subsequently enlarged and a neoclassical facade was added in 1813. This last feature survives but the remainder was radically rebuilt during the early 20th century. Nevertheless the dim interior contains a gilded baroque retable (retablo), while set back from the high altar is the un-ostentatious tomb of the island's conqueror and the town's founder, Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, buried here in 1525.
