IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SENORA DE LA CONCEPCION SANTA CRUZ

One of the city's most important landmarks, this church is also one of its most significant historical monuments. Its attractive square tower rises from a plaza enclosed by whitewashed 19th century buildings (including the handsome exterior of the tobacco works, Tinerfena Fabrica de Tabacos). Begun in 1502, much changed in the 17th and 18th centuries, the church was reopened in 1999 after many years of restoration. The cross which de Lugo first placed on Tenerife soil has been kept here, as has the British flag captured from one of Nelson's ships during the 1797 raid. An additional feature of this fine church is the tomb of Nelson's opponent, General Gutierrez, defender of Santa Cruz.
