CASTILLO DE SAN FELIPE PUERTO DE LA CRUZ TENERIFE
A sturdy little coastal fortification, the diminutive Castillo de San Felipe is named after King Philip IV of Spain. It was during his reign that settlers began to construct Tenerife's first capital, La Orotava, and its port, Puerto de la Cruz. The Castillo dates from that period and it remains the best example in the Canary Islands of the Spanish colonial style of architecture. The building has been immaculately restored and is now a cultural centre. Classical concerts are often given here, which provides the option for visitors of a pleasing change from the usual type of entertainment on offer. The Castillo also houses art exhibitions.
