CASA IRIARTE PUERTO DE LA CRUZ


Tomas de Iriarte, born in this house on18 September 1750, numbers among the very few Tinerfenos to have made a name for themselves outside the island . His poetry, plays and essays, and in particular his scholarly translations for example, from Latin into German made him a distinguished figure in 18th century Spanish literary circles. He left the family home at the age of 13 to continue his education in Madrid, where he remained until his death in 1791. This house was once considered an architectural treasure. It has fine traditional carved balconies and a beautiful interior courtyard, still well worth seeing, even though the house is today a charmless souvenir craft shop (one of too many in the area) with a low-key maritime museum upstairs.
