SON CATLAR

Menorca's largest megalithic settlement is reached on the road from Ciutadella to Arenal de Son Saura. Built around 1800 BC, It grew to its present size in Roman times and continued to be occupied right up to the Middle Ages. The most impressive feature here is the surrounding wall, some 900m in circumference and built of massive stones walls such as this one are often known as Cyclopean because of the belief that only giants could have built them. A doorway at the north side of the wall leads to a taula precinct, but the horizontal stone on top of the taula has fallen and collapsed. Unlike most prehistoric sites on Menorca, Son Catlar has helpful, multilingual information boards to guide you around.
