ES MIGJORN GRAN

The name of this quiet Village means 'the large town in the south, es migjorn being the local term for the low limestone plateau, broken by gorges, which dominates the landscape of southern Menorca. For 200 years the village was known as San Cristobal, after a blacksmith who founded a township here in 1769 but before that it was known locally as Es Migjorn Gran and it has recently reverted to its old name.

This is the only one of the inland towns not on the Mao-Ciutadella highway and it retains a certain provincial charm. The main street, Carrer Major, is like a painting of old Menorca simple white houses with balconies and green shutters, the few houses in bright blues and yellows providing an attractive contrast. During the siesta this street is deserted; then at 5PM it suddenly comes to life as ordinary looking houses turn into shops and bars.
