CALA MESQUIDA
Despite its proximity to Mao, this remains a peaceful and romantic spot. The capital's citizens come here at weekends, mainly to eat fish In the Cap Roig restaurant, on a slate headland carpeted with wild flowers. At the far end of the village is a wide beach of dark sand protected by cliffs to either side, one of which is dominated by an old watchtower. This was the site of the Due de Crillon's landing with a Franco Spanish invasion force in 1781. There is very little modern development (though this was one of Menorca's earliest beach resorts in the 19th century) and the village feels much more remote than it is and more Menorcan than touristy.
