CAlA D'AlCAUFAR
This small creek, 4km south-east of Sant Lluis, is classically Menorcan fishermen's cottages reach down to the water's edge and the narrow, curving, sheltered Inlet is lined with boats and backed by a sandy beach. This was the site of Menorca's first tourist hotel and it is still a popular weekend trip for the people of Sant Lluis. From the beach you can easily climb on to the cliffs, where a short walk leads to a headland crowned by a Martello tower beneath which are two grottoes that can be entered by boat.
Cala d'Alcaufar was the site of the first British landing on Menorca, in 1708. Just to the north is S'Algar, reached by a separate road or on a recently restored section of the coastal bridleway, Cami de Caval. The development here is a lot less restrained and the slopes leading down to the sea are a jumble of villas and apartments.
