PALMITOS PARK MASPALOMAS

Spread over 200,000sq m at the head of the Barranco de Chamoriscan, this park is one of the island's principal attractions. Exotic birds -over 230 different species, many of them un-caged, include flamingoes, toucans, cranes, macaws, hornbills, peacocks and tiny hummingbirds. Winding paths lead from one point of interest to another past a stream, a palm grove (there are 51 varieties among 1,000 palms), clumps of giant euphorbia, to a small island, home to a couple of white gibbons. The heated butterfly house has butterflies from all over the world, and the orchid house, said to be the first in Spain, is also spectacular. There are plenty of shady benches and cafes.

The park opened in the 1970s and has been regularly extended and improved. A 1,000sq m aquarium in a dramatic natural setting, with vast concave glass tanks set in rock surrounds, provides a panoramic view. Tropical fish from the Pacific region and the Amazon can be seen here.

A favorite with children is the parrot show, included in the price of entry. A well trained troupe of macaws walks tightropes and rides bicycles to enthusiastic applause. Exciting birds of prey shows attract a large crowd.
