CASTILLO DEL ROMERAL GRAN CANARIA
This small, rather tatty, fishing village of low white houses is named after a castle which has long since disappeared It is popular with those in search of simple but good fresh fish restaurants, many housed in former fishermen's terraced cottages.
Ingenio is a large town and still growing. Its name means 'sugarmill' and recalls its early 16th century history as a base for sugar production. The old town, spilling down narrow streets from the church of Our Lady of Candelaria, boasts some fine houses. Most visitors head straight for the northern suburb of Las Mejias and the Museo de Piedras y Artesania Canaria (Museum of Rocks and Canarian Handicraft): it displays an indifferent collection of rocks but excellent handicraft, particularly the open threadwork or cafados, and embroidery, bordados, for which this town and its neighbor, Carrizal, are famous.
