NERJA
One of Nerja's best known features is the Balcon de Europa (Balcony of Europe), an attractive tree-lined promenade which extends along a cliff top, offering splendid views of the coast and surrounding mountains. The old town rises up the hill behind, in a pleasant cluster of whitewashed houses, shops and cafes. There are fine views of the coast and a lively atmosphere. East of the town are the beaches of Calahonda and popular Burriana with further strands stretching away to the west The Nerja caves are a major tourist draw. Discovered in 1959, they lie 4km to the east of Nerja.
Although Nerja has grown into an internationally popular resort over the years, it has so far managed to escape the sort of development found along much of its neighboring western coastline. Most noticeably Nerja has managed to retain its small-town atmosphere. This could well change, however, now that Nerja is linked to Malaga by the recently opened motorway. Only time will tell as to what effect this may have upon the area in the future.
Some 4km east of Nerja lies the little village of Maro. Perched on a cliff top above a small cove, the village offers good views of the coastline. Of interest is the attractive little church of Nuestra Senora de las Maravillas de Maro and the 4-tiered aqueduct.
