FRIGILIANA NERJA
It is well worth taking a short drive of some 6km up into the hills from Nerja to visit Frigiliana. This pretty little village, which has won awards for its looks, spreads its dazzlingly whitewashed houses out over the hills in two sections. The older part is a mass of narrow, cobbled streets winding their way up the hillside with wonderful views over fertile orchards and the coast. Here and there you may come across a donkey patiently carrying its load. Streets and balconies are decked out with colourful flowers. The town continues to attract a growing number of visitors, with more shops and restaurants springing up all over.
One of the last battles between the Christians and the Moors was fought in the area In the 16th century, resulting in victory for the Christians. The tale of this glorious event is related by way of a series of ceramic tiles on the walls of the houses.
