VILABERTRAN MONASTERY FIGUERES

In the village of Vilabertran, 2km from Figueres, is an Augustinian abbey which is considered to be one of the finest examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture. The 11th century basilica, with three aisles, three apses and a tall, square bell tower, still stands, together with a 12th century cloister with plant motifs carved on its capitals. In summer the abbey is the setting for a delightful series of classical music concerts. Among the other buildings are the original chapter house and wine cellar, and a 15th century Gothic abbots' palace.
