L EMPORDA MUSEUM FIGUERES

The museum of local art and history was established in 1876 and moved to its present site on the Rambla in 1971. It contains archaeological discoveries from the Iberian, Greek and Roman periods, and a collection of 19th and 20thcentury Catalan art. There are several paintings by Antoni Tapies, a Dali and a lithograph donated by Joan Miro. Artists from Figueres are well represented in the section on Empordan realism. On the ground floor, a room is devoted to Nards Monturiol, inventor of the submarine.
