CASTELLFOLLIT DE LA ROCA Costa Brava
Spectacularly perched on a 1 km Long basalt promontory, carved out by the River Fluviil, this village looks for all the world as if it is about to fall off the cliff. The best view is from below, as you approach Castellfollit on the road from Besalu. At night, the cliff is floodlit and you can pick out the different geological layers in the rock. The narrow streets of the village, their houses built from volcanic stone, converge by a church, where you can gaze 60m down into the precipice below. Castellfollit is known for its almond biscuits and its pork sausages, and in the Museu d'Embotits (Sausage Museum) you can taste the local products after looking at old-fashioned mincing machines and models of the matanza or annual slaughter of pigs.
