CASTELL DE SANT FERRAN

This star shaped citadel, begun in 1753 as a defense against the French, was once claimed to be the second largest fortress in Europe. During the Napoleonic Wars It was captured by French forces, who imprisoned and later executed the hero of the Girona resistance, Alvarez de Castro. From 1904 to 1933 it was a high-security prison, holding some of Spain's most dangerous criminals. The castle is still in military use, but parts of It, Including the vaulted stables, have recently been opened to the public. Even when it is closed you can get a feel for its vast size by walking around the 3km path that encircles the castle walls.
