SIERRA DE AITANA MOUNTAINS

When the coast is sweltering in the summer heat, it's tempting to head for the hills. Easily accessible from Alicante (Alacant) and Benidorm, the Sierra de Aitana makes a good choice, with attractions for all the family, breathtaking mountain scenery, fresh breezes and cooler temperatures. The range takes its name from the peak of Aitana, at 1, 558m the highest summit in the Costa Blanca's northern sierras. You can drive nearly to the top and there are wonderful views over woodland to the surrounding mountains and the coast. Excellent hiking country, the Sierra has good trails and paths and picnic areas for families; children will enjoy the area's safari park.  On the edge of the mountains, the pretty villages of Sella and Alcolecha are worth a visit; both have good restaurants.
