CASTILLO MIRADOR BENIDORM

Nothing remains of Benidorm's castle, thought to have been built before the town's first charter was issued in 1325. It was strategically sited at the highest point of the original settlement on the promontory now occupied by the old village. Its story was one of repeated attacks by Algerian and Berber pirates. Plaintive documents exist imploring the king for money to repair it throughout the 16th century. It was finally blown up in 1812 and its ruins had disappeared by the beginning of the 20th century. Its old site, now a charming square by a church, is a favorite lookout point with sweeping views of Benidorm's superb beaches.
