BIAR TOWN COSTA BLANCA

Steeped in history and dominated by its Moorish castle, Biar is one of the most attractive of the ancient valley towns that once guarded the Castilian border. The town, a Moorish stronghold, was taken by Castile but fell to Aragon in 1245 and became an important frontier post. Today Biar is a charming town, and it is worth spending time wandering about and soaking up the atmosphere. Steep and narrow streets and peaceful plazas lead up to the fortress, with its solid walls and magnificent free-standing Moorish tower. There are fine valley views from the Castillo de Biar and an interesting Gothic church with later additions and a superb plateresque doorway.
