THE MONASTERY OF PEDRALBES
The monastery of Pedralbes was founded by King Jaume II and Queen Elisenda de Montcada in 1326 to accommodate nuns of the St Clare of Assisi order. Following the king's death in 1327, Elisenda spent the last 37 years of her life here.
The spacious, three-storey cloisters are one of the architectural jewels of Barcelona. Step inside and it is hard to believe you are just a short bus ride from downtown Barcelona From here, there is access to the refectory, the chapter house and the queen's grave. St Michael's Chapel is one of the highlights of a visit It is decorated with remarkable murals by Spanish painter Ferrer Bassa depicting Christ's Passion and the life of the Virgin Mary.
Monastic life in the 14th century is illustrated through permanent exhibitions in the original refectory, with its vaulted ceiling, the infirmary and the kitchens. Next door in the Gothic church you can hear nuns of the founding order sing during Mass.
