THE ART MUSEUM

The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art focuses on the art movements of the second half of the 20th century. The building, itself a work of art, was designed by the American architect Richard Meier. It has been the subject of much controversy but is increasingly being included as one of Barcelona's must-see landmarks. The vast white edifice with swooping ramps and glass walled galleries almost upstages the works on display. Its location surrounded by shabby old houses in the once rundown district of Raval has spearheaded investment in the neighborhood.

MACBA's extensive collection (exhibited in rotation) covers the 1940s to the 1990s, with special emphasis on Catalan and Spanish artists. It contains works by Klee, Miro and Tilpies, along with many others, including Joan Brossa, Maurizio Cattelan and Damien Hirst.
