HOSPITAL DE LA SANTACREU I SANT PAU
This remarkable hospital complex is a masterpiece of Modernisme by innovative architect Llufs Domenech i Montaner. Not only did he deliberately defy the orderliness of the Eixample by aligning the buildings at 45 degrees to the street grid, but he also built the complex in contravention of established hospital concepts by creating a 'hospital village' of 48 small pavilions connected by underground passages and surrounded by gardens, rather than one single massive building.
Construction began in 1902, as a long overdue replacement for the old hospital in the Raval, following a bequest from a Catalan banker called Pau Gil. The new hospital was inaugurated in 1930. The main pavilion, with its graceful tower and ornate mosaic facade, serves as a majestic entrance to the whole ensemble. Inside, the various pavilions are grouped around gardens that occupy an area equivalent to nine blocks of the Eixample, where both doctors and patients alike can enjoy a peaceful natural environment. The pavilions are decorated in ornate Modernista style using brick, colourful ceramics and natural stone. Over the years, the hospital complex has been restored several times and in 1984 it was declared a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO.
