Celebrated since the 18th Century, the Virgen de la Paloma Festival is one of Madrid´s most important and traditional events of the year.

Held in the old part of the city in the Plaza de las Vistillas, this incredible event includes flamboyant processions, street parades and concerts, while the whole area is festooned with decorations and coloured lamps.

The Madrileños dress in traditional outfits including shawls for the women, and short jackets and hats for the men.  Many locals take to the streets to dance the chotis, a long-established dance which has its roots in folk and country music.

This popular event finishes on the 15^th August, with a procession, where local firemen carry a picture of the Virgin of Doves.
