One of Tenerife´s most exciting and spectacular carnivals takes place every year in January and February, in the vibrant town of Puerto de la Cruz, in the north coast of the island.

Colourful and scantily-clad dancing girls, Afro-Caribbean traditional music and dancing and a host of other activities and processions keep the atmosphere electric, and the carnival attracts visitors from all over Europe.

The election of the Carnival Queen is followed by a noisy street parade, and the traditional burial of the sardine on Ash Wednesday.  A huge procession then takes place with music dancing, costume competitions and the age old tradition of beating a wooden replica of a cobra, while Latin melodies are played throughout the town.

Many of the songs and dances performed are indigenous to the island of Tenerife, including the zarzuela, and revelers wearing outrageous carnival costumes dance to the rhythms of rumbas, sambas and congas.
