Sacromonte
Sacromonte, the soul of Granada: The ancestral home of Granada's gypsy population, the flamenco and cave dwellings. The Gypsy clans of Sacromonte have produced many of Spain's finest flamenco artists and today some of the best flamenco performances are to be found in the area. Sadly, many are blatantly designed for the tourist market and you can find yourself pressurised to buy souvenirs and drinks.
The caves themselves begin on the Camino de Sacromonte and serve many purposes. Some are still homes, some serve as bars and restaurants and, during University terms, as discos. But to see a different side, visit the old caves on the far side of the Moorish wall. Most of these were deserted after the floods of 1962 but, if you make it to the top, the views are wonderful.
Sacromonte now has its own museum, which is well worth a visit to understand more of the history of this fascinating area. One word of warning - do take care of personal belongs. Because of the high tourist levels and the many distractions, the area is popular with pickpockets. It is sensible to stick to the main areas after dark.

Getting There: Next to the Albaicin quarter to the front of the Alhambra Complex. Well signposted.
