La Cartuja Monastery
A grand and glorious extravaganza, this is by far the most lavish of Spain's Carthusian monasteries. Founded in 1516, the land was donated by ‘El Gran Capitán' Gonzalo de Córdoba and built, some say, to rival the Alhambra. Certainly, nothing was spared in creating the overwhelming Baroque building and its staggering interior. The Church altar of twisted, coloured marble columns was once described as a "motionless architectural earthquake".
The Sangrario is awash with marble, jasper and porphyry and is topped by a gilded and painted Cupola. The Sacrista's cupola is even more stunning; the painted frescoes and sculptures showing influence from the newly discovered Aztec and Mayan civilisations. Sculptures by Jose de Mora from the 17th century, paintings and an Immaculada by Alonso Cano are simply the icing on a very delicious cake.
