La Capilla Real (Royal Chapel)
On the 13 September 1504, having decided that Granada would be their final resting place, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand signed a Royal Warrant that set in place the building of the Royal Chapel. Sadly, Isabella died before the work could start in 1505 and King died one year before the work was completed in 1517.
The Royal Chapel is a flamboyant building in true gothic style and is home to many wonderful artifacts. In the Sacristy, Isabella's crown and Ferdinand's sword are displayed alongside the Monarchs' outstanding collection of Flemish medieval paintings.
Isabella was originally buried in the Alhambra, but in 1532 the remains of both monarchs were re-interred in the crypt in simple lead coffins. There they lay with their daughter Joanna the Mad, her husband Philip and the tiny coffin of the Principe de Asturias who died before his 2nd birthday.
Above them in the main chapel an elaborate renaissance monument was built on the orders of Carlos V who felt that they were not sufficiently honoured. The Monarchs lay side by side with a lion and lioness at their feet. Legend says that Isabella's head sinks deeper into her pillow due to the weight of her intelligence compared to that of her less cerebral husband.
Many mementos of the Chapel are available, including an excellent CD book with photographs.
