Granada Cathedral
Granada Cathedral is otherwise known as the Catedral de Santa María de la Encarnación. Construction of this magnificent building began in 1523 - on the site of the original Mosque - on the orders of Queen Isabella as a symbol to Spain and the world that the victory against the Moors was complete.
The Gothic design changed within a few years to a more Renaissance-style and building work continued for many years until 1561, when the still-unfinished cathedral was first consecrated. The massive west front was added in 1667 and the wonderful relief over the Main Door (Puerta Principal) was completed in 1717 after the main works had been completed in 1704. The interior is amazingly light and richly decorated.
As well as the famous Royal Chapel (‘Capilla Real') with its wonderful blue, starry dome, there are many interesting side chapels to explore. The area around the Cathedral is frequented by Gypsy "fortunetellers" but, unless you speak fluent Spanish, the result will be a sprig of Rosemary and a lighter purse!
