Alhambra Museum
Based in the lower floors of the Palace of Carlos V, this wonderful collection of exhibits is often missed by visitors still reeling from the splendours of the Alhambra. There are displays of plaster arabesques saved from the early Alhambra and an impressive collection of ceramics. From the Nasrid era of the 14th and 15th centuries the Museum houses a fine gathering of paintings and stunning wooden panels and screens with elaborate carvings.
The centrepiece is the Alhambra Vase (Jarrón de las Gracelas). Made in the 15th century for the Nasrid Palace from the local red clay, this 1 ½ metre high vessel is decorated with blue and gold enamels and a motif of leaping gazelles. It is a superb example of ceramic craftsmanship, rivaling the best of the Alhambra Palace.
