The Alhambra
The Alhambra
The Alhambra, from the Arabic root meaning red or crimson castle, sits impressively on a hill overlooking the city of Granada, against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It consists of an Alcazaba (fortress), Alcázar (palace) and a small medina (town) in one, and dates back to the 13th century, when the Nasriden emirs began construction on the site of a former fortress which dated back to the 9th century.
The Alhambra has been awarded UNESCO world heritage status, and recently became a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of the World global election.
It is worth noting that owing to the large number of visitors to the Alhambra, and restrictions limiting the number of visitors, it is advisable to purchase tickets in advance. This can be done easily via the website detailed below, or by going directly to any branch of the La Caixa bank.
