Marbella Football ClubHundreds of tourists who flock to the Costa del Sol every year, take a trip to the Estadió Municipal, close to the centre of the town of Marbella, to watch Unión Deportiva Marbella play football in the second division B of the Spanish league.

Owned by British directors, Ian Radford and Wayne Elliott, this ambitious club has already signed Carl Cort from English Championship club, Leicester City, and is planning further raids for top players across Europe.

Most of the home games are played on Sunday afternoons, between 4.30 and 5pm, and there is no better way to while away a few hours with the family after a day on the beach, than with a trip to the football.  Under 16´s are admitted free, and there are plenty of places around the stadium to eat and drink either before or after the match.

The crowd is usually made up of ex-pats, tourists and locals, and the matches are very much family occasions, often with live entertainment outside the stadium in the early evening.

Similar to the season in England, matches are played between May and August, with occasional cup games midweek in the evenings.

Contact details: Unión Deportiva Marbella, Estadio Municipal de Marbella, Avenida Ricardo Lucena Sola, 29600, Marbella. Tel:0034 952827801. Websites: http://www.marbellafc.com/ (English) or http://www.uniondeportivamarbella.es/ (Spanish).

When: Normally Sundays. Cup matches may be played midweek in the evening.

Entrance:.€10-€20.  Under 16´s -Free.

Opening hours: Matches are usually played between 4.30-5pm.

Getting there:  Entering Marbella from the East, go under the ´Marbella Arch´ and continue past the car dealerships on the left and past the boats roundabout.  Keep in the right hand lane and 1km further on take the Ojen road to the right.  Follow the road up here and you will see the stadium on your right hand side.  Alternatively from La Cañada Commercial Centre cross the bridge and at roundabout with Mcdonalds on the right carry straight on towards Marbella.  Continue downhill and you will see the stadium on the left.

I also went to the match on Sunday with my cousin´s two kids, which was great value as children under 16 can go in free, and we had a great time. It may not be the Nou Camp, but the level of football was surprisingly high, and there was a really good family atmosphere throughout. We will definitely be going to the next home game, and are delighted to have such a good club on the doorstep. I hope Carl Cort recovers soon from his injury and may the club prosper under the new ownership!
