Palau Reial (Royal Palace)
The Royal Palace, or Palau Reial, is another of Barcelona´s Old Town´s must see places of interest. A 13th century structure, it was the residence of the kings of Barcelona for centuries, and is where Columbus himself was received after discovering the New World.
Its 14th century Gothic Salo de Tinell, the royal chapel built into the roman city wall, and the views from the top of the palace tower are all worth exploring. Beneath the Palace are streets and squares of the original city of Barcelona, built by the Romans. Accessible by lift, one can walk on walkways suspended over the world's most extensive subterranean Roman ruins. This is a fantastic attraction for those interested in the history and culture of Barcelona.
The site is wheelchair friendly.
